Self-Labeling. Let's Biff One Together.

Last Friday I did something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time.  I delivered a 4hr free Art Marketing Workshop to 10 friends all of whom have creative businesses.  Boy, was I nervous but as Farrah Storr writes in her new book The Discomfort Zone - don’t be nervous, be excited.

When was the last time you TRULY stepped out of your comfort zone?  Made a conscious decision to do something that you knew would rattle the very bones of you?

It’s easy to not do it, and understandable too - I mean, why on earth would you?

Because doing so makes us stronger.  

Putting ourselves in the line of feedback, good and bad is how we can grow.

Doing my course last year (coaching) I learned that we humans self-label.  We tell ourselves things that we use as our scaffolding. The thing is though, these labels can be broken, taken down and rebuilt - admittedly with effort.

The theory is that we tell ourselves things like ...

  • I’m rubbish at eating healthily

  • I’ve always been crap at drawing

  • I’ve never been good at swimming

Whatever it is, it’s just a thought and more importantly it’s in our heads only.

But there IS a way to overcome these thoughts - via the following process.

Firstly take your thought &

IDENTIFY IT

Then we can:

ACTIVELY DO THE THING WE TELL OURSELVES THAT WE ARE CRAP AT  (slowly and in small doses)

That then:

BUILDS OUR SELF-ESTEEM  (over-riding the original thought)

& then

OUR CONFIDENCE AT THAT THING GROWS

Finally we then

PROVE OURSELVES WRONG

that thought/self label we told ourselves we were crap at:

NO LONGER STANDS

& a new thought is established in place of the old one

I’M OK AT IT AFTER ALL!

Last Friday, I put all of the above to the test.

I obviously planned the hell out of my workshop and at 10am I stood in front of them all to deliver the goods I had promised.

Wow, what a day it was.  I’m currently de-briefing my session and have bazillions of things that I learned from actually doing it, but these things learned are GOLDEN.

Real, ripe feedback.

I’ll write more about my day soon, but for now I’m asking you to think about your own self-labeling.  Before my workshop last Friday, I believed that I was crap at delivering anything other than hands-on art workshops.

I’ve been proved wrong by doing it and delivering real time to 10 friends, all of whom gave up a precious day’s work to come along, support and learn from me.

Take time to think about your own self-labelling, perhaps we might biff a few into orbit together?
